Writing poetry and writing about poetry can be very different, yet have similarities at the same time.

Writing poetry is ones own personal thoughts jotted down on paper or in most cases the computer. Expressing deep emotions that are are hard to present on the outside. Taking what is inside and releasing them to the world or never sharing them at all, almost like a diary. Writing about poetry results in taking someone else's work and analyzing it to it's fullest extent. Creating interpretations that come about after multiple reads of a poem. It can be difficult because you are interpreting someone else's words which doesn't always lead to what the author intended. It is a form of stepping inside the author's shoes to understand the purpose of the poem. I think the one similarity between writing poetry and writing about poetry is coming to an understanding of the deeper meaning. Underneath all the similes, metaphors, imagery, and symbolism a theme is presented.

Writing about poetry helped with my own work because I got to analyze the techniques of a great poet. Therefore, I was able to utilize those techniques and shape them into my own work. Some of the techniques being imagery and symbolism which is common among most poems. Writing my own poetry helped me analyze another poets work because I was able to catch on to themes they had used. Like I said most poems always have an underlying meaning, something that needs to be sought out.

For my future in teaching I believe this will be very helpful. I would want my students to be able to create their own poems first just to get an idea of how it works. Then, they would analyze a famous poets work so that they can see how it differs from their own. After, they analyzed these poems they would go back and write a new poem to see how their work has changed or adapted. It is a great way for students to see that they are capable of creating great poems just like some other authors. An encouraging way to see the process of a poem and all the techniques that go into it.

  1. Hi Julia!
I totally agree with you that writing about a poem can be difficult sometimes. Especially since we want to have the right interpretation of the poem. So we spend hours either rereading the poem or reading about what other sources might think and compare it to our own thoughts. However I was once told that when you publish a poem, you release it into the world and let other people understand the way they want to because we can not be there and tell them exactly what we meant by each word that was written. I also believe that it was a great help learning to analyze a poem and the techniques that were used, just as you said. Every poet has their own technique just as we, from learning from them, will adapt them and twist them into our very own techniques that we might be able to teach someone else.

  2. Hi Julia! I like how you compare writing poetry to writing in a diary. God knows my notes app where I write my poetry is like my diary. You worded it well, describing the experience as expressing deep emptions that are hard to express outwardly. Interpreting other's poetry can be tricky for me, personally, because I like to know the author's intention in their poetry. I know my interpretation is also valid, but something inside me likes to know its "true" intent. (But then again, who can say what is a work of art's "true intent" is? I suppose that is a question for an English class, haha.) Both definitely involve understanding poetry, and I think that both can build up understanding of the other; writing poetry can help you learn how to interpret it, and interpreting poetry can help you to write it. It's a cycle of learning that builds upon itself. I think that that's a cool thing about poetry. I always like using what I learn from other poems to shape my own poetry. I'm glad you got to do the same. Great work on your poetry reading last week. I look forward to reading/hearing more of your work! :)
